Allison Danzig of The New York Times, describing the Varsity race: “Past the first quarter mile, Washington and Navy were battling for first place. California was third, Penn fourth and Cornell fifth. “Navy continued to give the Huskies all the competition they relished to the halfway point, but the Bears were worrying them, too, for rowing at 29 or 30, the California crew was staying close, alongside Washing- ton. “California then fell back a bit, and it was Navy and Cornell, both down around 31, that were giving Washington cause to worry. The three crews were so close that it looked to be anyone’s race, and California was only a few feet behind. “At the bridge [with one mile to go], the Huskies went clearly to the front, to open a half-length on Navy, with both at 31. Cor- nell, rowing 30, was third and California, at 29, was fourth. At two and one-half miles, Washington had a full length on Navy as both went up to 32, and California was creeping up on Cornell. “Then the Golden Bears turned loose their amazing sprint. They went by Cornell, and soon Navy was in a desperate fight to hold second place.
