Ed Leader remained at Yale, Rusty Callow at Penn, Al Ulbrickson at Washington and Ky During the 1930s, while Ulbrickson and Bolles were updating the Conibear Stroke, 1st Generation Conibear Coach Ky Ebright continued coaching at California, and in consulting with his former teammates and observing what was happening at Poughkeepsie, Ky also evolved slowly and soon joined them as a coach of the 2nd Generation Conibear Stroke. However, the process was at least as gradual for Ebright as it had been for Ulbrickson and Bolles. The arc of steadily reduced layback at Cal has been documented on film. Glendon-follower Buck Walsh’s Navy Midshipmen won in 1938, and then it was California, Washington, Washington in 1939, ‘40 and ‘41, before the regatta was cancelled during World War II. Navy won at Poughkeepsie again in 1947, the first regatta since 1941, and thanks to the war, 1948 became the first Olympic year after Berlin.
