THE SPORT OF ROWING and once we sorted it out in Switzerland, there was a magic that that boat had. “To Mike’s credit, I think that one of the things that he does incredibly well is that he plays a chess match with his athletes when you’re going along.”7824 Hall: “I agree with Fred. The outcome was that Sean and I were back in the boat something like two or three weeks prior to Worlds. Sean was in bow, and I was in stroke, and we go to Worlds in Finland, and from a seventh or eighth place finish in Lucerne we get a Bronze Medal. We took a couple of bad strokes in the race, but we medaled.”7823 Honebein: “I would argue that the ‘95 boat was even faster than the ‘94 boat. I feel that that lineup had just the right chemistry, 7823 Klepacki, op. cit. indeed faster. I recall one day in Switzerland at the end of the training camp, we were doing five minute pieces in the eight, working on solid base speed and building rate for the last minute. “In 1994, the boat had amazing base speed, and while we were very aggressive, we hadn’t mastered the sprint. In 1995 we found it, and I remember the chills I felt (and still get to this day) at the end of the last and best piece that of that workout. “All I could say was, ‘My God!’ “I had never before and never since felt such speed in a boat. And you know the bow seat is the best seat in the house for that.”7825 Lake Kaukajärvi The 1995 World Championships were held on Lake Kaukajärvi in Tampere, Finland.
